D/FW Personal Shopper, Julie Bartlett, thinks closets are a funny place.
Often our closet resembles what is or isn’t going on in our head. If your personal confidence has been damaged, it may be hard to get a grasp on how to organize your closet because your mind is not focused on creating a positive self space. You may be ‘stuck’ in an emotional time warp that will show up in your closet by your inability to weed out the unused, unmatched, unrepairable, and unwanted on a regular basis.
By the way, just how many people are in your closet? Do you open the door and find…Mom? How about your kids, sibling(s), colleagues, friends, neighbors or even your in-laws? So many voices held within that space can make it difficult to hear your own, define yourself well, and even see how you are showing up in life. Your closet should celebrate who you are and who you are becoming. You should be amongst friends!
Since the way you dress is your visual sign to the world on how you feel about yourself, you need to see just who is in your closet, defining you as they see you – and send them safely home. Yes, even that idiot in high school who insulted you and you believed them enough to have carried the insult around for a decade or two. The only tapes you should be listening to are the ones that are kind and compassionate toward you.
We are too emotionally involved with ourselves to give a fair and accurate value assessment of all that we are. Often, we lean towards the rejection side believing that that is a sign of humility. It’s not. If you love yourself, then you must be compassionate and forgiving with yourself.
There is an old saying that goes like this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ I heard this one decades ago with the emphasis always on the ‘love your neighbor’, not on ‘love yourself’. But the reality is that you cannot love your neighbor rightly if you do not first love yourself rightly. Create a closet that reflects a loving relationship with yourself.
